When the parade Carrus Navalis this year moves through the streets of Aalborg, it's with a reference to a thousand year old tradition that praises the lights victory over the darkness of winter and welcome new beginnings. In 1989 the Carnival of Aalborg restarted this custom.
The parade is put together by symbols. In front is the Shadow people and bell men who with rise brooms to chase the darkness, and push the winter and evil spirits away. Then the boat Carrus Navalis follow with the captain who along with his shipmates gives the land people what they deserve... and then some! The farmer with his ox prepares the soil behind the boat. The man who sows puts down the seeds so new life can rise. Nothing grows without the sun which therefore is being praised with a true replica of the sun carriage which is being carried through the parade. As the final piece in this tradition is the celebration of spring with dance and music. The parade is finished off with a bang when the Cannoneer society shoots in the spring, all while the African group Vimoroz and the samba group Poco Loco spreads joy, life, dance and music throughout the streets.
